How will I know my child is registered?
If you register on-line you will have an option to print a receipt for your registration. If you register in person, you will be given a receipt (if you paid by cash) after you have correctly and completely gone through the registration process. This will be your proof. Do not lose it!! If you paid by check, your canceled check from your bank is your proof.
In the past, I've been able to register even after registration was 'closed'. I can't this year. Why?
The NYSL Age Group Commissioners work very hard to make sure the teams are balanced and also try to accommodate as many other requests (practice night, etc.) as possible. The coaches then need to have their lineups in a timely manner, allowing them to contact the players and meet their obligations. To make all this happen and still keep this all volunteer organization running smoothly, we realized that we needed to be firm about the cutoff date.
When can I expect to hear from my coach?
The coaches will not get their rosters with your names and phone numbers until approximately 10 days before practices start. If you have not heard from a coach by the week before practice starts, please call the Registration Hotline at (317) 595-1850. Leave your name, player's name (spell it for us please), age of player, and a number where you can be reached.
What can I do if my child's team does not have a coach?
Very simple. Volunteer to coach. You'll find you have as much fun as the kids. NYSL holds coaches clinics each season, where you can learn all you need. You may leave a message with our Registrar by calling the registration Hotline @ (317) 595-1850. Be sure to leave your name, and a number where you can be reached.
How are teams formed?
Teams are formed using a system that takes into account seasons played and skill level. Teams are formed to be as even as possible.
Can I pick my child's team or coach?
Our teams are intended to be FUN for everyone. All teams are disbanded at the end of each season. As such, the make up of the teams can and will change from season to season. NYSL will try to honor requests within reason. We understand that often a child cannot get to a practice or game with out help from a neighbor or carpool. However, honoring such requests makes the registration process more complex and difficult for our volunteers as they try to form fair and balanced teams. We always try to keep in mind the "fun is our goal" philosophy of NYSL.
If you are interested in a competitive soccer league for your child, we can recommend several for you.
What about practices?
At the coach's meeting, team practice schedules will be arranged. We urge coaches to have a meeting with the parents so practice and carpooling issues can be discussed.
What equipment does my child need?
NYSL provides each player with a jersey and a pair of socks. You will need to provide:- a ball of the appropriate size for your child's age group.Soccer cleats are not required but highly recommended (much safer on wet or muddy fields). You can find these items at most sporting goods and discount stores.
- shin guards. No one can play at practice or a game without shin guards.
- a water bottle for games and practice.
What can I do to help?
Volunteer your time. Become a coach, become a referee, become a board member, call (317) 595-1850 and find out what needs to be done. It takes a lot of work to run a club with 1,000 kids and we never seem to have enough help to go around!
